Obituary
In the care of Solemn OaksMaria Elena Vasquez, 85, of Grant, died at home on Thursday, July 2, 2026, surrounded by four generations of the family she built, on the farm she owned — the same Newaygo County ground she had first come to as a nine-year-old with a picking crew, working the rows that would, one day, be hers.
She was born August 15, 1940, in Weslaco, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, the daughter of farmworkers, and she came north the first time in 1949, riding with the crews that followed the harvest up to Michigan every summer — asparagus in the spring, cherries and blueberries, cucumbers for the pickle houses, apples in the fall. She was nine years old and she worked the rows beside the grown-ups, and she remembered every mile of that first trip north for the rest of her long life, and told it not as a hardship but as a beginning.
She met Rafael Vasquez in a Michigan blueberry field in 1958, and they married the next year and made the decision that changed everything for everyone who would come after them: they stopped following the harvest and stayed. They worked other people's land and saved what almost no one in their position could save, and in 1975 they bought their own — eighty acres outside Grant, some of it the very ground Maria had picked as a girl. She lived to see it worked by her sons and her grandsons. She never once got over the wonder of that, and she never once let anyone else forget the cost of it, either.
She was the undisputed center of a family that now runs to four generations, and she governed it from the kitchen. The Christmas tamalada was not optional. Daughters, sons, in-laws, grandchildren, and eventually great-grandchildren were assigned their stations at the masa and the husks and the pot, and the lessons — how to spread it thin, how to fold it right, how to know it was done by the smell — were handed down whether you wanted them or not, and treasured, it turned out, precisely by the ones who had groaned about them at fourteen. Her hands fed hundreds. Her recipes are safe; she saw to that, which is more than can be said for some in this county.
She was a daily communicant at Saint Isidore for fifty years, said the rosary every night of her life, and quietly put more than one farmworker's child through school. She asked for very little and gave without ceasing, and she died as she had lived — at home, on her own land, with her people in the room and something on the stove.
She is survived by her children, Rafael Vasquez Jr. (Alma) of Grant, Elena Guerra (Tomás) of Fremont, Miguel Vasquez (Rosa) of Grant, and Teresa Salazar (Andrés) of Grand Rapids; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and the eighty acres outside Grant, which stays in the family, as she intended.
She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, Rafael, in 2015; her parents; her sisters, Juana and Consuelo; and a grandson, Marcos, in 2009.
