Obituary
In the care of Solemn OaksGloria Santos, 61, of Fremont, died Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Corewell Health Gerber Memorial Hospital, after a short illness she faced with the same steadiness she brought to thirty years on the line. Born in Holland and long a fixture at the Gerber plant in Fremont, she was, to hundreds of coworkers, simply the person who got you through your first week.
She was born April 18, 1965, in Holland, Michigan, the second of five children of Alfredo and Dolores Reyes, who had come north from Texas following the harvest and settled in Holland when the settling finally made sense. She grew up bilingual and hardworking, married Rubén Santos in 1986, and moved to Fremont two years later when the plant was hiring and the young couple wanted a town to raise children in.
She spent nearly thirty years at Gerber, most of them as a line lead, which on paper meant she ran a production line and in practice meant she ran the people on it. She could troubleshoot a jammed filler, hit a shift quota, and read a new hire's nerves from three stations away, and she made it her personal business that no one's first week was their worst. She trained hundreds of people — teenagers on summer jobs, laid-off men starting over, newcomers earning their first American paycheck — and she trained all of them the same way: patiently, in whatever language landed, on the assumption that they would be good at this soon.
On the floor she was calm and quick; off it she was the one who organized the collection when someone's basement flooded, the funeral casseroles, the quinceañera and the baby shower. She translated at the clinic and the school for families still finding their footing, exactly as someone had once done for her parents. She kept a jar of hard candy at her station and a longer memory than management for who had covered whose shift.
She loved her church, her telenovelas, her grandchildren, and a clean, well-run line, in an order she would have refused to specify. She is remembered for her patience, which never seemed to run out; for her welcome, which never came with conditions; and for thirty years of showing frightened first-day workers that they had, without quite realizing it, just been handed to the right person.
She is survived by her husband of forty years, Rubén; her children, Marisela (Tony) Guerra of Fremont, Daniel Santos of Grand Rapids, and Elena Santos of Fremont; six grandchildren; her mother, Dolores Reyes of Holland; her siblings, Alfredo Reyes Jr., Sylvia Cortez, and Rosa Mendoza; and a plant full of people she trained who are, today, training others the way she taught them.
She was preceded in death by her father, Alfredo Reyes, in 2011, and by her brother, Hector Reyes, in 2019.
