Obituary
In the care of Solemn OaksEdward Vinke, 70, of Fremont, died at home on Monday, July 13, 2026. For thirty-four years he was the band director at Fremont High School, which is to say that for thirty-four years he stood on a podium in front of a few hundred teenagers a week and taught them to make, together, a sound none of them could make alone — a lesson that outlasted the music for most of them.
He was born May 12, 1956, in Fremont, to Herman and Alice Vinke, started clarinet in the fourth grade under a teacher he never stopped crediting, and marched in the same Fremont High band he would one day conduct. He took his music degree at Central Michigan, came home in 1984, and picked up the baton he would hold for thirty-four years.
He directed something like four hundred halftime shows, and he made every one of them matter to somebody — because for every kid who would go on to play professionally, and there were a few, there were fifty for whom the band room was the reason they came to school at all. It was warm in there. It was where they had a section, and a chair, and a part that stopped working if they didn't show. Mr. Vinke knew every name, every instrument, and with uncanny accuracy which kids were eating lunch alone, and the band-room door stood open at lunch for exactly that reason. He was hard on the music and easy on the person, and a generation of Fremont kids found out in his room that they were good at something and wanted by someone.
He conducted the pep band through blizzards and blowouts, the concert band through Sousa and Holst, and the pit orchestra for thirty-four springs of school musicals. He ran the trip to state on a booster budget held together with car washes and hope, and brought home the ratings to prove it — though he cared a good deal more that the bus was singing on the way home than what the judges had written down.
What a teacher leaves is not a thing you can carry to a graveside, and his is scattered across several thousand people in Newaygo County and well beyond — everyone who can still play the fight song, still goes quiet at a good field show, and still hears Mr. Vinke's voice counting them in.
He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Kathy (Draeger) Vinke, the choir director at Fremont Middle School for most of them; their children, Eric (Mia) Vinke of Grand Rapids and Laura Vinke of Chicago; four grandchildren; and thirty-four years of students, who are, every one of them, invited on Saturday, with or without a working instrument.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Alice Vinke, and his brother, Paul.
