Obituary
In the care of Solemn OaksAgnes Postma, 94, of Maple Bend, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the county medical care facility in White Cloud. For the better part of sixty years she was the pie chair of the Ladies Aid at Maple Bend Reformed Church, an office no one recalls her being elected to and no one ever dared to contest.
She was born November 19, 1931, in Maple Bend, to Cornelius and Jennie Bouwman, and lived her whole long life inside a few square miles of it. She married Gerrit Postma in 1952, a farmer and later a mail carrier who knew every road in the township, and they were married sixty-three years. She raised five children, kept a garden and a spotless house, and gave the rest of herself to the church, where the kitchen was, everyone understood, hers.
For decades, when there was a funeral at Maple Bend Reformed, the family did not have to think about the luncheon, because Agnes had it. When there was a wedding, a bazaar, a mission supper — a hundred-year-old congregation's worth of coffee-and-cake occasions — Agnes had it: the ham buns, the scalloped potatoes, the folded napkins, and above all the pies, dozens at a time, produced from that kitchen in a steady output that spanned three ministers and outlasted two furnaces. She fed this town's grief and this town's joy, in equal measure, on paper plates, for sixty years, and never once sat down.
The pies were the thing, and the crust was the secret, and the secret was, precisely, a secret. Agnes never wrote it down. She turned aside every daughter, granddaughter, and Ladies Aid understudy who tried to stand at her elbow and learn it, with a small smile and a change of subject, and she told them plainly, for years, that the recipe was going with her. On Tuesday it did. There is some grumbling about this, which she anticipated, and which — those who knew her agree — she is enjoying.
She was the last of her Ladies Aid generation, having outlived every woman she ever cooked beside. She kept coming to church until she couldn't, kept a tin of cookies ready for every visitor, and asked at the end for nothing but a plain graveside and no fuss — though she would not, on principle, be caught dead telling anyone not to bring flowers.
She is survived by her children, Marlene (Jack) Reitsma of Maple Bend, David (Sandy) Postma of Newaygo, Nancy (Bill) Oostema of Byron Center, and Ronald Postma of Maple Bend; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and one much-mourned pie crust.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit, in 2015; a daughter, Karen, in 2018; her parents, Cornelius and Jennie Bouwman; and her brothers and sisters, all of them.
